Charleroi welcomes CityDepot
CityDepot is opening a subsidiary in Charleroi on March 1. We are moving into a new distribution center (at Rue des Rivages), built with funds from the city government, the Walloon Region and Europe. Charleroi is the first city in Wallonia where CityDepot launches its activities. "Our ambition is to reduce traffic, noise, and pollution and increase comfort for shop owners in the city center," says CEO Marc Schepers. "Investing in efficient and sustainable city distribution is investing in our future," Mayor Paul Magnette adds. "We are confident that our initiative will be followed quickly in neighboring cities."
CityDepot accepts goods on behalf of shop owners and carriers and delivers these goods when and where the client chooses. This is done safely, bundled and durable. CityDepot also offers additional services such as storage, the return of waste fractions, parcel distribution and solutions in the field of e-commerce for retailers and medium-sized organizations. Efficient distribution not only benefits shop owners and carriers, but also local authorities and residents. CityDepot also promises new direct and indirect jobs in the Charleroi area. Says alderman of Trade Philippe van Cauwenberghe, "Our depot is located close to a subway, railway and extensive road network. In short, the ideal location for a distribution center. The effects on mobility will prove to be very positive. All users of the city will benefit from it. Furthermore, this initiative matches with our strategic vision for development in Charleroi."
CityDepot does not come empty-handed to Charleroi. We already have an extensive customer base of carriers and wholesalers, who are delighted that they now have a partner for smart urban distribution in the Walloon Region. For support services and deliveries with cargo bikes CityDepot relies on local partners. CEO Marc Schepers: "CityDepot is a platform on which we invite different companies to work together. Partnerships are the business model of the future."
CityDepot is the first company in Belgium to offer a total solution for sustainable distribution of goods to the city center and reverse logistics, via road or water. In Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Leuven and Hasselt our solution has proved its worth. Thanks to a financial injection by bpost in our company in 2015, we now have the necessary financial strength to realize our ambitions at a fast pace. Paul Magnette and Philippe van Cauwenberghe: "After a very careful and critical evaluation, we have decided to entrust the operation of our distribution center to CityDepot. Charleroi is the first city center in Wallonia opting for smart urban distribution, but certainly not the last."
The brand new Centre de Distribution Urbaine (CDU), from where CityDepot will operate, is funded by the Walloon Region (50 percent), Europe (40 percent) and the city of Charleroi, as part of the FEDER 2007-2013 program.
